What are the 5 Elements?

The 5 Elements Model within the ZeNLP framework is the application of Daoist & Confucian philosophy to personal change.

In ancient China, a schema was developed to explain the nature of the universe, categorising 5 basic aspects to all phenomena. This idea was called wu xing jia – or the ‘School of the 5 movements’. In later times, both Daoism and Confucianism adopted this schema to support their own philosophical frameworks.

As pictured above, the 5 basic movements were named after five physical elements or substances: fire, earth, metal, water, and wood. An entire system of correspondences was built over a number of centuries along these lines.

The 5 Virtues

Both Daoism and Confucianism placed great emphasis on the idea that it is the responsibility of an individual to cultivate themselves to be the very best version of themselves they can be. Confucius ascribed five key virtues which were later placed in the 5 Elements framework; these are:

  • Connection
  • Integrity
  • Appropriateness
  • Wisdom
  • Behaviour

These virtues were considered to be fundamental models of human behaviour. By aligning your behaviour according to these five virtues, you would become a ‘perfected human’ (zheng ren).

Later systems of Alchemy within the Daoist tradition took this idea further, developing the idea of 5 basic qualities that form part of your true nature. These qualities were considered to become tainted by the conditioning you acquired throughout your life – from family, society, culture, and so on. The goal of Alchemy was to reverse this conditioning and come back to the authentic Core Self who you are.

The 5 Elements Model of ZeNLP

The presuppositions of Neuro-Linguistic Programming as a therapeutic tool contains many parallels to the those found in Daoism, Confucianism, and Zen Buddhism.

In NLP there are a number of models and processes that, when applied in a personal change context, will help you to decondition the outdated, un-resourceful self-beliefs and behaviours. These processes fit wonderfully within the 5 Elements model, and provide a cohesive framework for effective and thorough personal change-work.

The five main areas are:

  • how you relate and communicate with others
  • replacing out-dated beliefs/behaviours with new, generative ones
  • Core Values
  • Core Self-awareness & transformation
  • Emergent discovery and re-imprinting

In most cases, this process takes no more than 5-6 sessions, and can be purchased as a complete program.
